Rembrandtplein: Until Rembrandt's statue was unveiled in 1876 this square was called Botermarkt. The center of the public garden, near the cafés, houses the statue of the painter to which the square owes its name: Rembrandt. It has been there since 1852, when it was unveiled as Amsterdam’s first statue. This enormous sculpture group is the creation of two Russian artists, Alexander Taratynov and Mikhail Dronov and consists of 22 life-sized bronze figures.
For over a century it has been the centre of Amsterdam's nightlife. Here you can find famous cafés and discos. In summer, sitting in one of the many outdoor cafés, you can see the world pass by till way past midnight.
